McKinsey Converge
An integrated ecosystem for managing collaboration in tech-enabled spaces
OVERVIEW
In late 2019, I joined McKinsey as the design lead for “space management,” an ambitious initiative to create a unified space management system across more than 180 offices globally. The goal was to replace fragmented local processes with a single system that allowed travelling consultants to book workspaces for client meetings and collaboration, gave administrators and senior leaders better utilization insights, and lowered office utility costs.
I managed an Australia-based vendor development team and established a global user panel to test and refine features in real-world office environments, while partnering closely with internal teams across building automation, AV tech, and office services. We launched Converge, an integrated ecosystem designed to work seamlessly across multiple touchpoints, including mobile and desktop user booking app and admin interfaces, room tablets, and physical IoT sensors.
When I transitioned to a new team in summer 2020, we had successfully deployed the platform to 25% of the firm's global footprint. The early impact of Converge reduced daily administrative tasks for office services teams by up to 30% and gave traveling teams a reliable way to coordinate their time in the office. I returned to the project the following year to design the booking logic and capacity controls that supported the firm's safe, structured post-pandemic return-to-office strategy.
Ultimately, the platform fundamentally rearchitected how the firm utilized its corporate real estate, saved thousands in facility energy costs, and directly informed multi-million-dollar workplace technology investments globally.
