Microsoft 3D Ecosystem

An online marketplace built for spatial creators

OVERVIEW

Between 2016 and 2018, I worked as a Lead Experience Designer and Researcher on Microsoft's "3D for Everyone" initiative, with a primary focus on Remix 3D - a cloud-based content platform designed to make 3D creation, curation, and sharing accessible to everyday users, educators, and enterprise professionals. The platform served as the foundational asset pipeline powering 3D workflows across Windows 10, connecting consumer tools with broader investments in spatial computing, including content pipelines supporting HoloLens and emerging mixed reality experiences.

Working cross-functionally across product teams, I balanced hands-on product design with user research to bridge traditional 2D workflows and spatial 3D environments, designing features and end-to-end user journeys across Paint 3D, 3D in Office, and the Mixed Reality Viewer. By combining qualitative research, competitive analysis, and web analytics, my team successfully contextualized spatial computing for mainstream use cases, culminating in the public launch of native 3D model integration within Microsoft Office. Though Remix 3D was later retired as a standalone product, the capabilities and ecosystem investments developed through the initiative carried forward across Microsoft's portfolio in Windows, Office, and mixed reality applications.

GOALS

  1. Establish a scalable content pipeline of reusable 3D assets and workflows supporting HoloLens and connecting Microsoft's growing portfolio of 3D and mixed reality products

  2. Increase engagement, lower the barrier to entry, and support a growing ecosystem of millions of Windows 10 users creating, discovering and sharing 3D content and mixed reality experiences

  3. Inform product investment decisions, identify & prioritize high-value use cases for 3D and spatial computing through continuous research, behavioral analytics, and cross-team experimentation

  4. Improve discoverability and reuse of community-created content through search, tagging, and content management experiences
